ARTIST: The Honeydogs

Here’s a group I’ve been wanting to write about since last July. I stumbled on The Honeydogs latest EP, Sunshine Committee, while I was in the middle of moving between states/blogs/periods-in-my-life, and it’s taken a while to get them on here.

Summed up, I’d describe this short record as perfect driving music. For me these songs will always be linked to driving around the streets of Indianapolis as a new transplant, trying to find my way to whatever it was we were looking for at the time: a hardware store, a park downtown, a Super Target. It’s the music I was listening to with the window down in the summer, excited and a little scared about our new adventure. And while we may be on the cusp of winter, there’s always a place for good summertime driving music. Sunshine Committee’s got some Stones rhythm to it, with a little Family Stone funk and Wilco countrified-atmospherics on top. The songs are tight and deliberate, with plenty of organ and brass flourishes to punctuate singer Adam Levy’s lyrical observations. It’s short, sweet, and an all-around fun listen.

Agreed – good driving music, but I hear it more as a winter song, windows rolled down, heater blasted.
