ALBUM: There Is No Enemy by Built to Spill

I’ve never known much about the Boise band Built to Spill, but thanks to their latest release, There Is No Enemy, I’m learning. Here’s what I’ve learned:

First – Built to Spill makes some pretty fantastic music. Duh, where have I been right?

Second – You don’t have to be loud to rock hard.

Hear me out on this one, a cursory listen to this album will reveal it’s filled with a lot of mid tempo songs that you might describe as ‘dreamy’ or ’spacey’ that can feel like a demo or stripped down version of another song (especially with Doug Martsch’s echoey voice), but subsequent listens will reveal the astonishing richness and depth to this record and you’ll start to register the mind-blowing intricacies.

Third – Doug Martsch’s beard is awesome. A standout beard in indie music is something to be proud of.
