ARTIST: Jason Collett

Jason Collett is one of the many faces in the Broken Social Scene picture (who’ve got a new record coming in May – yay!) – and he happens to be one of my favorites of the bunch. His 2008 album Here’s To Being Here was one of my favorite late finds from that year, and he’s got a sound you wouldn’t usually associate with the gang he runs with.
His delivery is often compared to Dylan’s – fairly straight-forward folk troubadour-ing – but there’s no way a BSS contributor is going to leave it simply at that. There are sonic surprises littered throughout his records that support and color his already thoughtful and descriptive songs, making his music engaging on so many levels. And on top of all that his songs just groove.
Collett’s got a new record due out in March called Rat A Tat Tat, and he just recently released an EP of songs recorded during the same sessions. That EP is called To Wit To Woo and is available digitally and on his current tour.
Below is a song from Rat A Tat Tat, a song from To Wit To Woo, and one of my favorite tracks from Here’s To Being Here (I call it disco-folk and I love it). Enjoy!
mp3: Jason Collett – Love Is A Dirty Word
from the album Rat A Tat Tat (Out March 9, 2010)
mp3: Jason Collett – Little Tiger
