We caught Jeremy Messersmith Friday night at the White Rabbit Cabaret in Fountain Square. I’ve been pretty into his most recent record, The Reluctant Graveyard, and I was excited to hear some of his new songs live.  He played a fantastic set to an intimate candlelit crowd, and it was one of those rare live experiences where I found myself sitting back and thinking “What on earth is everyone else in this city even doing?” He was that great. Recorded, Messersmith utilizes all kinds of bells and whistles to bring his pop confections to life, but in person it becomes apparent that his songs stand equally well on their own, as he utilized a loop pedal to create backbeats and harmonies with himself right on-stage (for my favorite example of the night, check out the video of him playing “Miracles” below). His loop-tracking was great, but what struck me the most was how clean and clear his voice and playing was – every song sounded absolutely pristine.

Unfortunately the venue dashed our hopes for an encore by turning up the house music too soon, but we did have the chance to say hi to Jeremy after the show. He was completely charming, and during our brief conversation we discovered that he’d actually read our review of The Reluctant Graveyard last week, right here on our little blog! (In case you’re reading this – HI JEREMY!) Anyway, it was a great show, and after spending our last two weekends at ridiculously humongous live events, it was so nice to sit back and enjoy an incredibly talented musician in such an intimate setting.

Setlist and mp3’s after the jump.

We recently received this from Josh Ritter’s mailing list, and it’s kind of great:

During Josh’s show at The Tarrytown Music Hall this past Saturday night, the audience had quite the surprise for Josh and the band. Thanks to an unknown fan (who are you?) who handed out glowsticks – with instructions – to the entire audience before the show, the performance of “Lantern” was a concert moment not to forget.

The sound isn’t incredible, but that’s not the point. Enjoy:

So great right? That kind of stuff just warms my heart. We saw Mr. Ritter in June and even though there weren’t any glowsticks, he was still all kinds of awesome – you can read about it HERE.

YoGabba

I know this kind of activism isn’t our usual thing on here. And I know that Yo Gabba Gabba is just a kids show. But if you’ve ever actually seen an episode of the show, you know that it’s not just a kids show. It’s imaginative, it’s quirky, and it’s got really great taste in music.

Well Yo Gabba Gabba is in trouble, you guys. And we have to save it.

Here’s an excerpt from an email sent to me by a friend associated with the show:

Nickelodeon (who airs Yo Gabba Gabba) is at it again… pulling their corporate pouty-pie routine because they don’t completely own Yo Gabba Gabba. Although the show keeps increasing its popularity  here and internationally, they won’t commit to another season. They are also dragging their feet playing some  of this seasons’ new episodes (they keep using the old ones)… holding those new episodes hostage, so to speak.

Well that sounds pretty lame. So here’s what we can do about it:

If you would be so kind to sign this petition to show interest in the show, many fine/hard-working entertainers, musicians and crew could be employed again. It takes about 30 seconds to fill out the form. Pass it along, too! Thanks so much.

It actually only took me 24 seconds to fill out. So yeah. There’s really no reason not to. Here’s the link:

And just in case you’re not familiar with the show, here’s a few of my personal highlights:

Ok, I swear after this I’ll lay off the Janelle Monae thing for a little while! But this remix of The ArchAndroid’s standout track featuring B.o.B. and Lupe Fiasco is too good not to post:

I love that Monae throws down a brand new verse herself after her two guest bits – and it outshone both of them! (even Lupe’s, who I always love!) So good.

Happy 4th ya’ll. Have a good weekend.

I stumbled on The Voice Project a few weeks ago and have been meaning to post about it… it’s a cool little site dedicated to supporting the women in Uganda who are bringing peace to their war-torn country through music (read all about it here). Not only is the cause worthy, but the music is fantastic, with an array of talented musicians adding their voices by covering an array of other talented musicians. Here’s one of my favorites:

And this one’s pretty great too:

Thanks for bearing with us during my recent Finals-induced silence. But don’t worry, regular posting will resume shortly, since…. I’ve just finished my FIRST YEAR of dental school! That’s right. First year = owned. And oh man does it feel good. In fact, I think this video of Paul McCartney performing “Hey Jude” at the White House pretty much sums up how good I feel right now. It is so good.

Sir McCartney received the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, and performed some special numbers at the White House (including “Michelle”, dedicated, of course, to the first lady). Other performers that night included Stevie Wonder, Jack White, David Grohl, Elvis Costello, Herbie Hancock, Emmylou Harris, Jerry Seinfeld, the Jonas Brothers and more. The Gershwin Prize has only been awarded to Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder before this, and the whole thing will be broadcast on PBS sometime in July.

All in all, it’s almost as cool as me finishing my first year of dental school. Almost.

My love of Olafur Arnalds is starting to border on the obsessive.

I’ve been listening to his forthcoming album for a few weeks now and its nothing short of majestic. I was so happy to see “Hægt, kemur ljósið” (one of the strongest tracks from …and they have escaped the weight of darkness) get the video treatment.

…and they have escaped the weight of darkness will be released June 8th (the same day I turn in the paper that is currently making my life hell. Really looking forward to that day.)

Ok I’m apologizing in advance. Even though I’ve got SO MUCH I want to write about, my posts are going to be few and far between for the next two weeks or so. (Finals. Ugh.) But even with everything I should be doing right now, I couldn’t NOT post this video. Because I think Janelle Monae might just be my new favorite person.

I’ve heard great things about her record (it’s apparently a concept album about a messianic android in some dystopian future – awesome), but I can’t vouch for it myself yet. What I can vouch for is what she did on Letterman last week. Because wow.

Am I right?! The official music video for the song is kind of great too:

Now this is exactly the kind of pump-up jam I need to get me through these next two weeks! So good!

It’s no secret that I love Lissie. Her five song EP Why You Runnin’ (out now on Fat Possum) is stunning, and her live show is stunning-er. But just as striking as her incredible talent, to me, is her down-to-earth approach to her music and how genuinely humble she appears to be. These two interviews (from Baeble Music and Plays Well With Others, respectively) showcase that pretty well.

Her debut LP is coming out in June, but only in the UK (boo!). So here in the States we’ll just have to hold onto that little EP and keep watching interviews. And we can always troll her myspace, which happens to have a new song up, called “When I’m Alone”. So there’s that, too.

A good friend sent this to me the other day – it’s a behind-the-scenes video of MOS’s stop at Yo Gabba Gabba (you know, the kid’s show with incredible music taste). Below it is a link to their actual performance in the episode. Below THAT is another link to a news story on the Mates, focusing on what it’s like to be a parent/rock-star on the road. Consider this entry just another submission to the “Mates of State Are Ridiculously Cute” file. That file is getting rather large, actually.

I’ve been studying all week for a test that I finally took this morning and I feel amazing. I hope everyone’s weekend is as relieving as mine is going to be! This should kick it off nicely:

Happy Friday everyone!

Jeremy Messersmith, the incredibly talented troubadour from Minneapolis, will be releasing a new album next month, called The Reluctant Graveyard. It’s the third and final installment in his three-album trilogy, which includes The Alcatraz Kid and The Silver City (both are fantastic – you can read our review of The Silver City here).

In addition to whimsical water-colored cover-art, you’ll find on each of Messersmith’s records humble pop songs with a penchant for blips and boops, ranging from Zombies/Beatles-style chamber pop to quieter, acoustically rooted ballads ala Sufjan Stevens or Elliott Smith’s more ruminative side.

I’m very excited to hear his latest, and you should be too. Check out “Violet!”, the surprisingly sunny first taste off a record with “graveyard” in the title – then check out his live performance on 89.3 The Current of “A Girl, A Boy And A Graveyard” below.

And for all of you coming a little late to the Jeremy Messersmith party, you can name your price for his last two records on his website RIGHT NOW. I think you should! Enjoy!
